David Fincher's Dragon Tattoogate Embargo Solution: No Early Screenings for Critics
Film bloggers and pundits and awards season watchers have pecked this David Denby-Scott Rudin exchange to death with no clear consensus or solution, but one player in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo kerfuffle has a solution. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t show movies to anybody before they were released,” director David Fincher told the Miami Herald. “…If I had my way, the NY Film Critics Circle would not have seen this movie and then we would not be in this situation.” More wishful thinking from Fincher after the jump! According to Fincher, he was against the early special NY Film Critics Circle screening from the start. (Not that it helped much anyway.) And though he admits to wrestling with Rudin over the very subject of early screenings, he agrees with Rudin’s argument that embargo-breaking reviews can potentially do harm to the business of a film. “I think Scott [Rudin]’s response was totally correct. It’s a hard thing for people outside our business to understand. It is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. But as silly as this may all look from the outside — privileged people bickering — I think it’s important. Film critics are part of the business of getting movies made. You swim in the same water we swim in. And there is a business to letting people know your movie is coming out. It is not a charity business. It is a business-business.This is not about controlling the media. If people realized how much thought goes into deciding at what point can we allow our movie to be seen, they would understand. There are so many other things constantly screaming for people’s attention. I started shooting this movie 25 days after I turned in The Social Network. We have been working really hard to make this release date. And when you’re trying to orchestrate a build-up of anticipation, it is extremely frustrating to have someone agree to something and then upturn the apple cart and change the rules — for everybody. Yes, it’s a business, and there are financial stakes at hand for a film and its makers surrounding the timing of release, the window of a marketing campaign, and the delicate dance studios do with critics in risking negative reviews from early screenings. But Fincher’s wrong; the Denby-Rudin incident is about controlling the media, or at least holding critics to a predetermined set of agreed-upon (but not mutually created) parameters that dictate when certain films may be written about. It’s control in exchange for access — a tricky and often precarious see-saw of interests to balance. And that relationship gets even trickier in awards season, now that Sony’s early gamble (the NYFCC special screening) did not pan out as planned, leaving Dragon Tattoo with no early honors with which to kick-off its concerted Oscar campaign. Then again, Fincher’s ideal scenario for releasing a film is clearly not feasible either, barring some new world order in the film industry. Would it be nice to not have films utterly (or even just partially) spoiled by trailers and clips and marketing materials? Sure! But would the general public buy tickets just purely out of love for the cinema without a promotional machine to entice them this way or that — or without the film critics that can indeed guide moviegoers in the choices they make? No. (Is this a matter of “privileged people bickering?” Kinda.) Filmmakers certainly couldn’t have it both ways, in any case, and still be in “business-business.” So the industry needs film critics. It needs trusted channels through which audiences may be reached. There are going to be embargoes, and whether critics decide to adhere to them is their choice; whether the studios choose to enforce violations is up to them. (Oh, the countless times unsanctioned early reviews have been ignored on films of lesser importance!) For more, including Fincher’s description of the “most valuable film critics” (i.e. not the professional ones), head to Rene Rodriguez’s Miami Herald report. The Self-help guide to Wednesday TV: Two New Comedies to Hate, the Whitechapel Finale
The Exes Comedy is very hot this TV season - thank ABC's best-of-class Wednesday comedies (all in repeats tonight), CBS' Monday blockbusters, NBC's cult faves and Fox's giddy New Girl - but two lousy new sitcom arrivals buck the recognition, departing a sour aftertaste. Normally I'd celebrate at any circumstance that cuts down on the X Key to one hour half an hour, however in cases like this, it makes way for Fox's uncomfortable I Personally Don't Like My Teenage Daughter (9:30/8:30c), which traps two gifted comics - I am Earl's Emmy-winning spitfire Jaime Pressly and a pair of-time Tony-winning scene-stealer Katie Finneran - in no-win roles as shrill moms who had been once ugly ducklings and so are now cowed by their bratty offspring (forgettably produced by Aisha Dee and Kristi Lauren), that are embracing function as type of spoiled mean ladies who tormented the moms when they were in secondary school. Want more Matt Roush? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! "Are they all so mean to us?" gripes one of the insecure moms, that are mocked for style - Pressly's character was elevated by strict religious zealots who saw the area since the devil's playground - or bad consumer habits. "I did not eat my cat!" shrieks the compulsively hysterical Finneran getting a mouth full of chocolate. Later, when she's seen neurotically stuffing her face with cake, using her hands - "C'mon, Nikki, take advantage of the fork! You aren't a real bear!" - I came across myself disliking what Hate was doing to individuals gifted stars. Worse, the show is ultimately toothless, because when snotty since the children are, they love their moms, and the other way round. Awwww... phooey. The writing is actually trite that whenever the teens balk inside an approaching episode considering the household Evening (the ever-present ex-husbands are requested), we share their despair. "This is one way horror movies start," button button snaps one of the women. Horror movies are frequently more amusing. More positively retro, TV Land creates The Exes (10:30/9:30c), which feels as if a stale Frankenstein sitcom cobbled together with spares - by which we mean veteran stars - who made their names on better shows. Thus we've 3rd Rock Within the Sun's Kristen Johnston just like a brash lawyer playing landlord/mama bear to three clients who live in among her houses within the hall. Look, there's Scrubs' Jesse Faison playing to type just like a sports-agent womanizer. And hello, Newman! It's Seinfeld's Wayne Dark evening just like a coach potato who little but order online. The Next wheel is David Alan Basche, a familiar TV face still waiting for popular, since the newbie roomie, weepy and desperate and known to by Faison to become "like my ex-wife however with no pricey breasts." It's The Odd Couple plus one - except it is not. It's all regulated controlled just kind of sad. The males would rather consider their bachelor pad just like a "talking about-free zone," however just wish TV Land hadn't felt compelled to discuss that certain around. In contrast, the network's cheesy Hot in Cleveland (10/9c) can be a modern classic. Since it begins its third season, we obtain a direct consequence of Elka's (Betty White-colored) aborted marriage, as she now must decide whether or not to choose her fiancé Fred (Buck Henry), her returned-from-the-presumed-dead husband Bobby (Don Rickles) or her longtime squire Max (Carl Reiner). How come not she just keep your 3 and form their particular version in the Friars Club? This can be a heckuva great deal of legendary talent in their corner. Meanwhile, Victoria (Wendie Malick) and Pleasure (Jane Leeves) find you will discover unforeseen effects for you to get tied their particular knot. Shifting gears to crime drama, BBC America's twisted Whitechapel (10/9c) reaches the conclusion of the macabre six-episode run, while using police under siege within the "federation of crime" introduced with the creepy twins who appear to become the reincarnation in the infamous Kray brothers and sisters in the '60s. But they're they? Pressure in working with the truth behind the Kray legend really reaches unhappy DI Chandler (Rupert Penry-Manley), who tries to temper his Obsessive-compulsive disorder demons with liquor: "I'm self-medicating," he notifies a concerned friend. But is he drunk, or crazy as being a fox, when he challenges one of the Krays with a boxing match? Chandler's picky, fragile integrity makes him probably the most endearing crime-mma fighters you'll meet this season. He's much better company than Duncan "Hatch" Hatcher, the glum, humorless Savannah detective carried out having a miscast John Corbett in TNT's insipid mystery movie based on Sandra Brown's Ricochet (9/8c). Trying for hard-boiled, Corbett is only able to achieve half-baked in this particular flimsy twist around the femme fatale caper, where the worst crime might be the harm perpetrated round the Southern accent. The belle from the deflated ball is Dexter's Julie Benz as Elise, the sexy wife from the possibly corrupt judge (Gary Cole since the improbably named Cato Laird). She falls into Hatch's lap, literally, while he and also the sarcastic partner Deedee (the monotonal Kelly Overton) investigate Elise's shooting from the thief in their house. He can't trust Elise (specially when more dead physiques compare at her foot), but more youthful crowd surrender to her. The plot handles being in some manner both complicated and simplistic, yet is not credible or compelling. A double treat for your The Exorcist fandom tonight: On USA Network's Psych (10/9c), William Shatner site visitors as Juliet's disadvantage-guy father, torn between making things right along with his law-abiding daughter on and on after yet another dream scam. ... We're all part of Trek Nation, roughly the Science funnel signifies in the two-hour special (8/7c) marking the landmark space opera's 45th anniversary. Series creator Gene Roddenberry's boy Fly fishing rod leads this tribute, revealing rare films in the household archive (like the first Trek fan convention) and ending up in famous fans including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams and Seth MacFarlane while he reaches the roots from the global phenom. Trying to find live music? NBC's annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special (8/9c some NBC affiliate entrepreneurs will begin airing the festivities at 7/6c) features the legendary likes of Neil Gem, Tony Bennett, Carole King as well as the Radio City Rockettes gathering for your lighting in the 74-ft Norwegian Brighten tree. Contemporary functions are the Voice champion Javier Colon and choose Cee Lo Eco-friendly, approaching Smash star Katharine McPhee, crooner Michael Bublé as well as the inevitable Attacking Youthful Boys, revealing his music video with Mariah Carey on "All I'd Like for Christmas Is Basically That You.In . Another all-star gathering round the opposite coast happens at L.A.'s Nokia Theatre, the staging ground for CBS' The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! - Countdown to Music's Finest Evening (10/9c), throughout which key nominations for your Feb. 12 honours show are introduced between musical performances from Rhianna, Usher, Beyonce, Ludacris, Jason Aldean, This Rock Band Perry while others. A focus in the special can be a rap celebrity collaboration on Grammy Hall of Fame-honored rap recording "This Content,In . featuring the show's host LL Awesome J, Grandmaster Costly, Lupe Fiasco, Melle Mel, Ron Ross and Scorpio. Work of Arts The Sucklord the way the children Challenge Destroyed Him
The Sucklord The Sucklord became a member of Bravo's Factor of beauty a brazen supervillain, but left defeated by, among other activities, his sentimental side. Within the finish from the week's episode, he went home after co-developing a clear maze as street art, a project according to him developed because of getting been beaten lower physically and psychologically with the competition. "I didn't notice coming however when it came it made total sense in my opinion,In . according to him. "There's hardly any sleeping that continues throughout this stuff. I used to be practically half-asleep car challenge therefore i wasn't totally conscious of the products happening, as evidenced with the mediocrity of my artwork. I not successful the job, I not successful the show, I not successful your competitors. Arrived will be able to have the hell after that.Inch TVGuide.com spoke for the Sucklord (nee Morgan Phillips) on Thursday about why he thinks the kids challenge crippled him and why he's concentrating on a China Chow action figure over, say, a Jerry Saltz one. Plus, his applying for grants Our god in the Rings versus. Alien, Lola versus. Sarah K, Jerk of Art, male organs, plus much more: Work of Art's Bayete: I possibly could not pull it together whatsoever Your companion in the pub art challenge, Sarah K., came out being the brains behind that maze. Why you think the idol idol judges in a position to escape her? Sucklord: It's apparent in my opinion why. I personally don't like to convey it, however think Bill Forces of individuals was right: That piece didn't have my voice. That was the problem. Whether it was good or bad, that was the type of factor Sarah K. does. It absolutely was clearly more her than me. If it had been a Suckadelic piece, it might have been this gigantic 'F--- you' wonderful these f---ing deranged Alien people throughout it, together with a 'F--- Jerry Saltz' somewhere. But that's not where my thoughts was at. I used to be morally destroyed with this point. This is actually the best I really could develop. Within the finish throughout your day, that small rat moving across the side of the maze was where I used to be at. That was my contribution cheap it absolutely was so small , reduced actually was had had happened to my own, personal voice. ...By putting myself to the competition, I used to be posting with a maze as it were, a type of mental experiment, that was the conclusion result: it switched me to the the complete opposite of a few things i was stated to become. I used to be stated to become this huge f---ing supervillain, which i switched to become this huge softie, mushy-mush that considered everybody and was ready to, like, come down rather than let someone else lose. (Laughs) That's what went down in my opinion, and possibly this can be a beautiful factor for an individual when you are a painter it absolutely was failing. Was the emotional Sucklord a concept to suit your needs? Sucklord: I'm speaking about, I'm shateringly conscious of that each can be obtained inside me. It'll determine a lot of the way i operate in the world. But, like anybody, and possibly personally it's more exaggerated, but everybody has this outer self they project, their ego ... in a tournament similar to this, that ego can get divided, specifically if you keep losing. They deny you of sleep. They criticize and choose the s--- of your stuff therefore making you appear just like a loser. Also, I obtained became a member of with this particular kid as well as the kid assisted me start feeling all sentimental, so when that happened, I lost my edge. It's good as possibly an individual experience, however, you realize, the ego personally is why the art work, not the sentimental person. This is why my options following a kids challenge were utter garbage. How about just before the children challenge? You think the idol idol judges got everything you were about? Had you been putting your better stuff forward? Sucklord: Well, In my opinion the Gandalf challenge was pretty bad. The initial mistake I made was misunderstanding the kitsch challenge: I decided the artwork work that we thought was great already, just what could I really do from it except worsen it. In addition to, it absolutely was Our god in the Rings, which i possibly could be sarcastic and ironic using the Exorcist prior to the finish in the world, though Our god in the Rings, I have a lot of reverence with this to accomplish anything really existence altering. It reverted me to the kind of artwork I did so once i was 8 years old which when i first started really participating in Our god in the Rings. That was failing. Nevertheless the motion challenge was more efficient. That Switch the Rat, as ugly as that type of factor was, that was totally me. As well as the Winning Collection appeared to become me. [The idol idol judges] didn't appear use a s--- about people. Maybe there's other artwork that was better but got the eye, however when the kids challenge showed up so when Jerry Saltz described I possibly could not make use of the Exorcist any more which i made the decision to that particular, that was really once i lost. Once I agreed along with his assessment that was once i really lost the sport. You've since designed a couple of Jerk of Art pieces. How if you were advised to visit home perhaps you have make that? Sucklord: The idea found me a couple of days after i was told to visit home. Like, "Wow, I will make Jerk of Art on that wall." It absolutely was a thing that ruminated in my opinion. After which it I believed what most paralleled my experience was that Charlie Brown cartoon where he visits the spelling bee and many types of his pals are rooting for him which he'll get everything until he must spell "beagle," the kind of dog Snoopy is, which he blows most likely probably the most apparent word. ... I will have nailed that street art, however not successful. That assisted me appear like Charlie Brown, therefore i put him in just like a parallel to my own, personal experience. Could it happen to be therapeutic which causes it to be? Sucklord: Well, I merely believe it is a thing that must be mentioned. That's things i really do, I make people little toys and so they say causes of me. I desired low of return and show a few things i are capable of doing while using action figure to date as making some type of commentary about myself. You recommended that reality TV stars carry something they could sell whatsoever occasions, and tweeted that you just offered something with a fan who approached you for $10? The thing that was it? Sucklord: Just Suckadelic purchasing and selling cards, a SuckPax. I have my own, personal kind of purchasing and selling cards which i simply happened to own something in my personage which i believed I'd sell it off on their behalf once they want a little from it. Lola or Sarah K.? Sucklord: Neither. That was all just lots of smoke and mirrors. I have got a girlfriend who I am really deeply deeply in love with. She wasn't too happy in regards to the way I used to be functioning on this program which i understand why she will get bad which personally i think regretful. However, you realize, you set me around lots of women and i'm gonna talk s---. It is triggered damage throughout my relationship, and so i am picking my girlfriend over everyone else in the world. Possibly you've found a means to recover it to her yet? Sucklord: Still on the way. Getting seen a couple of from the outtakes from the episode, it is not too pretty. It absolutely was a very penis-happy episode. Michelle seems particularly obsessed. Truth or editing? Sucklord: Uh, you will have to request her in regards to the penis factor. I'm a guy, so clearly I have got a penis factor. Male organs work. They're a sizable part of the human existence. It seems natural that people is going to be thinking about them and putting them inside their artwork. The whole house seems just like a randy place. Sucklord: Hey, guy. Everyone there's pretty outgoing, significant people. Everybody likes to joke about this kind of stuff. I am unsure - it's such as this wherever The year progresses, therefore this didn't appear so unusual in my opinion. Exactly what are you working now? Sucklord: I'm apt to be mixing Transformers with Occupy Wall Street. I'm concentrating on a China Chow action figure. I'm just sticking for the Suckadelic program, I'm pushing my purchasing and selling cards, I'm working onmy next Toy Lords of Chinatown video and i'm just trying to construct my opportunity. I don't deal with the gallery system, I sell my work right to my clients. I'm just gonna still strengthen that process. Ensure it is simpler for people to be. China can get her own action figure. Pretty sure Jerry won't receive one? Sucklord: Of all the idol idol judges there, she made an appearance to become the only the one that had any empathy for your horror and misery i had been all suffering. I'm speaking about, males like Jerry and Bill Forces, despite the fact that they might have mentioned a couple of things in my opinion that could possibly are actually relevant, it's all regulated controlled happening in the vacuum on the account to date as Let me tell. They don't seem to know, or otherwise they aren't permitting it to exhibit, any type of empathy for anyone in the base whatsoever. In my opinion on their behalf it's all regulated controlled just an intellectual exercise and there's almost no human component. Jerry, in recapping the episode for Vulture, written he really loved your idea for your ripped-from-the-mind lines challenge. However, you stood a change of heart after Simon showed up for his evaluation. Can you regret listening? Sucklord: Simon is really a champion in the Sucklord immediately therefore i actually was inclined to listen to him. I am unsure if he always always provided our advice however put a lot more value within the advice than others mixed up in show. He and Jerry will be different people with various tastes, so Simon's saying what he thinks, he is not always saying what he thinks Jerry will say. Within the finish throughout your day, it's my call to find out items to put on the internet for. Things I will did is say, "F--- it, I'm just prone to do a few things i appear look foward to.Inch The fact I used to be so ready to just give on my small idea really spoke that I used to be just failing and would never know what is I used to be doing in those days.

Movember Mustache Movie Madness: Stellar Science-Fiction 'Staches
by Jim Gibbons A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, they may not have had Movemberthe men's health charity event where blokes grow mustaches to raise funds for the Livestrong and Prostate Cancer Foundationsbut they certainly had facial hair. And where razors are needed, there are brave and bold gentlemen willing to take their whiskers where few dapper, masculine men have gone before. From the far-flung future to the other side of the universe, here are some of sci-fi's finest mustaches. Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in the original Star Wars trilogy You can't have a list of great sci-fi 'staches without lauding the luscious upper lip hair of the smoothest guy in the Star Wars galaxy! Lando Calrissiana gambler turned administrator turned military generalwas one of the greatest heroes the Rebel Alliance had in the fight against the Galactic Empire. A notorious ladies' man as well, flashing that mustachioed smile could melt hearts of women from Coruscant to the Outer Rim. Edward James Olmos as Admiral William Adama in "Battlestar Galactica" and Gaff in "Blade Runner" Sporting a fuzzy caterpillar in one of science-fiction's most celebrated films and one of its most beloved television series (albeit infrequently as Adama) is cause for praise. That's a 'stache-sprouting face with some serious longevity in the medium! Be it as the fedora-sporting, origami -folding future cop Gaff in "Blade Runner" or humanity's last and best hope against the Cylon menace as Adama, when you see EJO's mustache, you know you're in for one hell of a ride. Tom Selleck as Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay in "Runaway" This 1984 flick, written and directed by Michael Crichton, about household robots going renegade and running amuck is pretty abysmal and would be forgettable if it weren't for one of the greatest mustaches in men's facial hair history. Jack Ramsay is, essentially, only on this list because he was brought to life by Selleck's 'stache in its prime: "Runaway" was filmed between seasons of "Magnum P.I." That said, the movie does feature Selleck going up against Gene Simmons and his army of killer robots, so it's got something going for it besides that killer 'stache. James Doohan as Montgomery Scott in the Star Trek franchise Compiling this list without including one of the finest engineers in Starfleet history, grower of one of Starfleet's finest mustaches, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, would be a crime against the entire genre. Working alongside Starfleet greats like James T. Kirk and Spock, Scotty saved countless lives with his adept transporter and engineering skills. The man (and his mustache) even managed to save his pattern in a transporter beam for almost 75 years, making his the only mustache on thisor any Movember listto be on duty for nearly a century. Sharlto Copley as Wikus van de Merwe in "District 9" Moving on to a more modern sci-fi classic, but one that also features an accent that whispers through the whiskers of a wondrous 'stache, "District 9" put its mustachioed protagonist through the paces and then some. As Wikus' 'stache remained steadfast, his view of the oppressed prawns changed as drastically as his physiology, helping to reaffirm the genre as a prime place for social commentary alongside mind-boggling special effects. Carl Weathers as George Dillon and Jesse Ventura as Blain Cooper in "Predator" Two former professional athletes turned actors playing two hardcore, camo-clad bad asses that a Predator would travel across the universe to hunt, these manly mustaches went head-to-head with one of the greatest hunters in the galaxy. You get double your mustache buck with this classic! Sure, they met their demise, but to one of science-fiction's greatest alien monsters. Getting shaved like that ain't a bad way to go out for an action hero! Sean Connery as Zed in "Zardoz" The first Bond's finest role it is not, but "Zardoz" is a crappy cult classic that'll leave your jaw hanging about as far from your mustache as possible in disbelief. Those who have seen it love it or hate it, but just look at that ponytail! That diaper! That 'stache! You can debate the merits of the film, but you can't mess with that mustache. Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore in "Ghostbusters" This mustache (A) Ain't afraid of no ghosts. (B) Knows that if someone asks you if you're a god, you say "Yes!" (C) Loves Jesus' style. (D) Busts specters for a steady paycheck. (E) Enjoys science explained in terms of Twinkies. (F) Loves NY City. (G) All of the above. If you answered "G," well 'nuff said, right? Jim Gibbons is an assistant editor at Dark Horse Comics and a third year Movember participant. Madonna Reveals Tortured Youth: Boys Called Me Hairy Monster
First Published: November 10, 2011 4:25 PM EST Credit: Harper's Bazaar LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption Madonna and Andrea Riseborough on the cover of Harpers Bazaars December 2011 issueMadonna wasnt always the iconic, sizzling sex symbol who millions of fans have come to know and adore. In fact, according to the Material Girl herself, her childhood was tortured and rife with painful schoolyard taunts. The boys in my school would make fun of me, Madonna revealed in an interview for Harpers Bazaars December issue. [They called me] hairy monster. You know, things like that. Madge also revealed that she began to find her confidence when she ventured out to gay clubs in her teen years. Straight men did not find me attractive, she told the mag. I think they were scared of me because I was different. Though many fans are in awe of her ability to retain her youthful looks and seemingly endless energy, Madonna says shes tired of having her age constantly mentioned in the press. I find whenever someone writes anything about me, my age is right after my name, she said. Its almost like theyre saying, Here she is, but remember shes this age, so shes not that relevant anymore. Or Lets punish her by reminding her and everyone else. Adding, When you put someones age down, youre limiting them. To have fun, thats the main issue. To continue to be a provocateur, to do what we perceive as the realm of young people, to provoke, to be rebellious, to start a revolution. Age certainly has not limited Madonnas ability to provoke the superstar is currently gearing up for the December 9 release of her feature film directorial debut, W.E, a romantic drama based on the affair between Englands King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson a topic the singer found to be strangely polarizing during her time across the pond. When I brought up the subject of Wallis Simpson to people when I was living in England, I was astounded by the outrage that was provoked by her name, Madonna said. The movie is all about the cult of celebrity. We like to put people on a pedestal, give them one character trait, and if they step outside of that shrine-like area that we blocked out for them, then we will punish them. What Will Dr. Murray Face If Convicted?
First Published: November 4, 2011 11:05 AM EDT Credit: Getty Images Caption Dr. Conrad Murray watches Alberto Alvarez, one of Michael Jacksons security guards, testify during his involuntary manslaughter trial at the Los Angeles Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles on September 29, 2011 LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- If Dr. Conrad Murray is convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, hewould face a sentence ranging from probation to four years in prison. Here are some of the factors related to sentencing: Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor would have complete discretion to decide the sentence. He would receive a probation department report on Murray recommending a sentence. Both prosecution and defense attorneys also would file recommendations. But the decision is his and his alone. The judge can consider that Murray is a defendant with no prior criminal record, a circumstance that might mitigate in favor of probation. Because of AB109, a recent California prison realignment bill, Murray probably would not go to state prison. If given a prison sentence, he would most likely serve it in the county jail because of prison overcrowding. There has been speculation that he would be allowed to serve a term of house arrest. The penal code calls for a convicted defendant to be sentenced in 20 days, but he can waive that time while his attorneys prepare a motion for new trial and an appeal. He could remain free on bail during that period. Murray would lose his medical license. If there is an acquittal, Murray walks free and his bail is exonerated, but he might still lose his medical license. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. MTV's Killer Halloween: Style To Die For!
Welcome to MTV's Killer Halloween! All week long, we're looking at ten of the greatest horror movie villains of all time, and with your help, we'll determine once and for all just how powerful these murdering psychopaths and evil masterminds really are. Our contestants: Freddy Krueger ("A Nightmare on Elm Street"), Jason Voorhees ("Friday the Thirteenth"), Michael Myers ("Halloween"), Ghostface ("Scream"), Leatherface ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), Chucky ("Child's Play"), Norman Bates ("Psycho"), Pinhead ("Hellraiser"), Hannibal Lecter ("Silence of the Lambs") and Jigsaw ("Saw"). Today, before we get these killers to spill their guts and show us what they're really made of, we're focusing on something more at the surface: their style. A horror icon is nothing without an iconic look, and all ten of these killers have their own unique aesthetic to remember them by. Beyond the break, rank each horror villain's style points -- one being poor style, five being excellent style -- and check back tomorrow for the results and the next round of voting! Freddy Krueger He gifted hipsters with the sweater of their dreams -- or their nightmares, depending on your view. Plus, Freddy introduced the one-glove look to popular culture. No one else could be held responsible for that, right? Jason Voorhees The difference between Batman and his Gotham City impersonators? He's not wearing hockey pads. But the terror of Camp Crystal Lake has a different, more optimistic view on hockey equipment as a fashion statement than Gotham's Caped Crusader -- we tend to side with Jason on this one. Michael Myers It's not often that we here at MTV Movies go outside with our gas station attendant uniform and scary-man masks on, but when we do, we look a lot like the "Halloween" icon. Trust us, there's no better outfit to get your slow-walk on. Ghostface Talk about economical! Not only does Ghostface effectively terrify and slash his/her victims to bits, (s)he does it all in the comfort of a store-bought Halloween ghost costume. Working class killers, this costume's for you. Leatherface Wearing another human being's freshly removed face for a mask is typically frowned upon in our society. But in the horror killer circle, it's high-end fashion at its goriest. Leatherface, you're just showing off at this point! Chucky How could you possibly be afraid of a suspenders-wearing, ginger-colored Good Guy doll? Exactly. That suspension of terror you feel when looking upon Chucky is precisely what this killer has in mind when getting you to let your guard down. Norman Bates Mommy issues are one thing, but killing patrons of your remote motel while wearing your mommy's clothes? That's something else entirely. Something weird. Something terrifying. Something that most killers would kill for, probably. Pinhead Tight black leather with flowing gowns and roughly six million sharp pins protruding from your face: this is the go-to look of cenobite leader Pinhead. Even if you're not a fan, be careful how you rank Pinhead's style: you wouldn't want to suffer through an eternity of agony for one simple little poll, would you? Hannibal Lecter Hannibal is a man of many styles: masks made of human flesh ala Leatherface, restraint muzzles put in place to prevent him from eating visitors... the list goes on. We're told his costume is best enjoyed with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Jigsaw If you'd like to play a game, best to do it while operating one of Jigsaw's all too creepy murder devices. Wearing one of his gothic black robes is fashionable too, though perhaps not as iconic as the little Jigsaw puppets seen floating about the "Saw" movies. REVIEW: Tense, Timely Margin Call Evokes Occupy Wall Street Outrage
Margin Call isn’t the first film to peer into the moneyed, aspirationally heartless world of finance, and it’s not going to be the last, but it’s got a fair shot at being the one with the most masterful timing. J.C. Chandor’s feature debut aims to offers insight into the mindset of bankers poised to plunge the country into the 2008 economic crisis because of their own reckless conduct, and it reaches screens as Occupy Wall Street has spread across the U.S. and internationally, fueled in part by outrage about a lack of accountability in the financial and corporate world. The film’s not an indictment or a satire — it’s a tense but contemplative exploration of being on the other side of one of those mirrored skyscraper windows, of being in a precarious place of privilege, power and, most important of all, carefully guarded remove. Margin Call unfolds over 24 hours, give or take, and it rarely ventures out of the Manhattan office building in which its unnamed firm is based. When it does, it’s to head to other protective bubbles — the warmly lit interior of an upscale bar, the glide of a town car making its way through nighttime traffic, a walk around the block with headphones on. As, over the course of the night, higher and higher-ups within the company are called in like escalating bosses in a video game, they appear as if by magic, immaculate in businesswear at three in the morning. The highest-up of all, the reptilian John Tuld (Jeremy Irons), is flown in via helicopter to land on top of the building, as if he’s reached a point in his life and his career where his feet need not ever touch the ground. “It’s not a prison,” one character scoffs when another asks if he can go out for some air, but Margin Call makes it clear that membership here is a type of trap, one never more obvious than when you’re cast out. The film begins with layoffs, HR representatives circling a floor of people trying their best to concentrate on their work and pretend it’s just another day while awaiting the dreaded tap on the shoulder. Eric Dale (a very good Stanley Tucci) is let go that day, escorted out by security per corporate mandate, his phone already shut off. On his way down, he hands what he was working on to junior analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), who plugs in some holes in Eric’s research and uncovers the fact that the firm’s been working outside its own risk algorithms for the last few days and is poised to lose everything in an increasingly unstable market headed for a crash. Margin Call’s high-powered cast — Kevin Spacey oversees the trading floor, Paul Bettany is his right hand man, and Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley and Aasif Mandvi fill other roles up and down the corporate ladder — adds to the seductive air of the whole environment. These people are painfully smart and so sleek in their pricey suits, and if they all seem to be miserable workaholics, well, that’s the price of being on top of the world. Bettany delivers a monologue explaining how he spent his $2.5 million salary last year, on a convertible, on his mortgage, on clothes and restaurants and booze and hookers (the last two he’s discovered he can write off as “entertainment”), while standing on top of the building overlooking the city and smoking an illicit cigarette. It doesn’t sound like a moment of triumph, but rather one of disillusionment — it’s just more money in your pocket to be spent. There’s a touch of wish fulfillment to Margin Call’s introspections — we’d like to believe there’s a sense of regret, or shame, or emptiness to this world. But it’s hard to find it wholly plausible that when an underling hears his boss’ outlandishly high salary he’d observe “that’s fucked up” instead of just imagining the life he’d lead if it were his and thinking of it as something to aspire to. Characters pause to deliver monologues every once in a while, and while the aforementioned one from Bettany and a similarly number-filled rant from Tucci are memorable, another from Irons is awfully on the nose, as are exchanges like this: “It’s like a dream.” “I don’t know, seems like we may have just woken up.” But these are minor quibbles — Margin Call’s strengths are of mood and the slick surfaces of things, and these elements are haunting long after the credits have rolled. How do you decide to screw over all of your colleagues and the rest of the world? By committing yourself to the koan that it’s just business, it’s just business, it’s just business, it’s just the way things are and always have been. “You have to believe you’re necessary,” one character insists, before telling another he’s certain to get fired. How do you let these things happen to everyone else? By avoiding being everyone else for as long as you possibly can.

Kevin Hart: Laugh inside my Discomfort
A Codeblack Entertainment discharge of a Hartbeat Prods. and Codeblack Entertainment production in colaboration with Usual Suspects Prods. and Comedy Central Films. Created by Shaun Clanagan. Executive producers, Kevin Hart, Dork Becky. Co-producer, Quincy Newell. Directed by Leslie Small. Co-director, Kevin Hart. Special segment director, Tim Story. Script, Hart, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells. With: Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Will "Spank" Horton, Harry Ratchford, Na'im Lynn, Dwayne Brown, Nate Cruz, Joey Wells, Ray King.Comedian Kevin Hart's hybrid standup film "Laugh inside my Discomfort" reaches its best if this takes that title to heart. Riding a deserved wave of recognition around the comedy circuit, Hart can unveil a sex gag with the best, but it is his gimlet-eyed take by himself rather unfunny troubles -- a drug-addict father, a lately deceased mother, the divorce -- that mark him like a funnyman worth attention. Folded in the U.S. Sept. 9 having a nontraditional African release to follow along with, pic should score more exposure in ancillary. Opening having a cordially funny bio around the star (a little by which he returns, a boastful overcoming hero, to his old Philadelphia 'hood, despite an overall total insufficient recognition from local figures, is really a riot), the meat from the film may be the diminutive standup's high-energy performance at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, limned with live-wire explosiveness and pizzaz. An unusual scripted segment follows, casting Hart and the pals (including Taraji P. Henson) inside a largely forgettable "Reservoir Dogs" parody that may (and really should) be easily clipped for broadcast.Camera (color) editors, A.J. 'Road Trip' star DJ Qualls, who currently stars as a police officer on the TNT series 'Memphis Beat,' tweeted on Saturday morning that he was beaten by police in Vancouver, Canada "for no reason." The actor claimed he witnessed a fight and tried to identify the attacker to police, who then tackled and cuffed him. "Just got out of the ER," he tweeted, adding he got stitches after a police officer "busted his face." A rep for the Vancouver Police Department told TMZ they were "not aware of the incident" or who Mr. Qualls, who starred in 'The New Guy' and 'Hustle & Flow,' was. Qualls is apparently taking it all with a sense of humor: "picked up 600 followers in an hour," he wrote on Twitter. "Who knew police brutality was so hot right now?" He thanked his fans and added, "I'll get over it. have a hospital bracelet and cool new scar." Hours before the incident, the actor tweeted that he was drinking alone in his hotel room and was planning to celebrate hitting 10,000 followers with "a vile but seriously funny tweet I can't get out of my head." Despite the alleged attack, he still plans on following through: "I feel less bad," he wrote to fans. "Thanks! Im [sic] almost inclined to unleash the most vile tweet ever, but its still got to wait awhile. It is AWESOME, tho!" Qualls is currently on location in Vancouver to film an episode of the CW series 'Supernatural,' according to his Twitter. [via Twitter and TMZ] photo courtesy of TNT Transformers 3 Online Free

The Strange Good reputation for Don't Request, Don't Tell
Cinemax documentary The Strange Good reputation for Dont Request, Dont Tell analyzes the Clinton administrations questionable policy.
Created by Realm of Question. Executive producer, Sheila Nevins supervisory producer, Jacqueline Glover producers, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Mona Card, Gabriel Rotello company directors, Bailey, Barbato editors, Langdon F. Page, Chris Conway music, David Benjamin Steinberg. 79 MIN.With: Margarethe Cammermeyer, Barney Frank, Joe Lieberman, Patrick Murphy, Aubrey Sarvis. Before political compromise grew to become taboo, it birthed some peculiar items, couple of more questionable compared to "Don't Request, Don't Tell" policy introduced throughout the Clinton administration regulating gays within the military. After dedicating at least a year chronicling efforts to get rid of the muddled law, producer-company directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato are compensated having a happy ending: Its official repeal on Sept. 20. Regardless of the title, though, DADT's "strange history" really is not everything unusual rather, it's proof of what formidable competitors lack of knowledge and prejudice could be. For everyone who has adopted the controversy, this 79-minute film's most fascinating portion most likely resides in the first third, chronicling how ousting homosexuals grew to become the state military stance throughout The Second World War. Challenges to discrimination appeared within the seventies, but did not take shape until after candidate Bill Clinton -- getting pledged to permit gays for everyone freely -- settled for any half-measure in face of opposition in the military hierarchy as well as an intransigent Congress. Regardless of the intentions, enforcement of Don't Request, Don't Tell motivated the military to release a lot more than 13,000 service people and forced others right into a closet where honesty threatened to torpedo careers. A brief history includes moments of heartbreak -- a murder that adopted extended harassment of the youthful guy afraid to talk out -- and hilarity, such as the Navy approving a warship to be used within the Village Individuals "Within the Navy" video, presuming it might be a marvelous prospecting tool. The filmmakers spend lots of time meeting with gay service people (their faces hidden), advocates, legislators, and particularly the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, whose last-minute efforts to kill DADT throughout Congress' lame-duck session this past year undertake the characteristics of the political thriller. Not too "The Strange Good reputation for Don't Request, Don't Tell" -- like many Cinemax paperwork, an unapologetic bit of liberal advocacy -- will probably conquer many converts. Fortunately, discriminatory guidelines toward gays seem to be living on lent time because of more permissive attitudes among more youthful decades, which most likely describes the vehemence of opposition from self-hired stewards of things as they are, for example Sen. John McCain. Included in "The Strange History," there is a quote from Sgt. Leonard Matlovich's tombstone that reads, "After I is at the military, they offered me a medal for killing two males, along with a discharge for loving one." With this particular latest doc, Bailey and Barbato have etched another epitaph, one which basically states: "Don't Request, Don't Tell: 1993-2011. RIP. And good riddance." I'm so happy and relieved the Emmys will be in good hands. She's a great improviser, great on stage -- an authentic professional. The one thing is always to make everyone look wonderful, and Jane will probably be great. She just must bear in mind that with the finish in the show, since there's only one champion per category, the region is principally full of nonwinners. 5 Best Steven Soderbergh Movies
5 Best Steven Soderbergh Movies By Christy Lemire September 9, 2011 Photo by Universal Studios/Bob Marshak "Erin Brockovich" LOS ANGELES (AP) Steven Soderbergh has made every kind of film imaginable, from fizzy comedies to penetrating dramas, from experimental indies with miniscule budgets to star-studded extravaganzas. But he always seems willing to try anything, and that's what makes him so vital and exciting.Soderbergh's latest, "Contagion," follows a deadly virus as it spreads worldwide, claiming millions of victims. It gives us a chance to roll up our sleeves and wash our hands and pick five of the director's best films: "Traffic" (2000): Soderbergh won the Academy Award for best director even though he was competing against himself with another film on this list, "Erin Brockovich" for his sprawling depiction of the international drug trade. Not a moment of this 147-minute epic rings false. Soderbergh juggles several complex, intertwined story lines and a huge, big-name ensemble and makes it all look effortless. Serving as his own cinematographer as usual under the name Peter Andrews, Soderbergh explores the pervasiveness of drugs and the futility of government efforts to stop them through a hyperreality, one that's raw and edgy at times, dreamy and almost hallucinatory at others. Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle and an Oscar-winning Benicio Del Toro are among the top-notch cast. "Out of Sight" (1998): Soderbergh captures just the right tone every time, even as he encompasses a variety of genres. Based on the Elmore Leonard novel, this story of the improbable connection that forms between a career bank robber (George Clooney) and the federal marshal who's after him (Jennifer Lopez) ranges from buddy comedy to gripping suspense to sexy, noir-style romance. Clooney and Lopez have crazy, flirty chemistry as they exchange banter in Scott Frank's script that couldn't be tighter or snappier. They're each at the height of their charisma, and together they're irresistible. The excellent supporting cast includes Ving Rhames, Albert Brooks, Cheadle (again), Steve Zahn and Catherine Keener. "The Limey" (1999): Terence Stamp is just a complete bad-ass as a British ex-con who travels to Los Angeles to investigate the death of his daughter. His performance is powerful and without question, but Soderbergh provides an intriguing contrast by telling the story in fragments, in overlapping wisps of memories and dialogue, which contributes to the air of mystery and keeps us guessing. Stamp prowls a blistering, bleached-out LA, a mix of downtown warehouses and cheap apartments, shimmering beaches and staggering hillside mansions. He's hunting a slick, laid-back record producer, played perfectly by Peter Fonda, who was involved with this much-younger girl when she died. Soderbergh seamlessly blends these actors' aura of '60s cool with his own contemporary style. "Erin Brockovich" (2000): Soderbergh takes a daunting and seemingly dry topic the true story of the industrial pollution of a town's water supply and turns it into an inspiring tale of redemption that's warm, human, funny and even sexy. That largely has to do with Julia Roberts, who earned a best-actress Oscar for playing the title character, a single mother of three who takes on a massive class-action lawsuit while working as a file clerk for her lawyer (Albert Finney). Roberts radiates sass and smarts with her clingy clothes and dirty mouth, and she's an absolute hoot. Aaron Eckhart counters that, bringing sweetness and tenderness to the film as the biker next door who cares for Erin's kids. "Ocean's 11" (2001): His remake of the 1960 Rat Pack caper is perfect escapist entertainment: fun and fast-paced, slick and spontaneous, light and full of laughs. Clooney, Roberts, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt are clearly having a ball bouncing off each other, never taking themselves too seriously despite their Hollywood heavyweight status. Clooney stars in the Frank Sinatra role as Danny Ocean, who amasses a rag-tag crew of cons to pull off his latest heist: a robbery of Las Vegas' biggest casinos on the night of a heavyweight championship fight, when he knows the high rollers will be in town and the vault will hold about $150 million. The fact that this is preposterous, yet goes so smoothly, is only part of why it's such a kick.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Jonas will get lower to 'Business'
Nick Jonas, center, isn't any stranger to tuners. He did "Hairspray" with Marissa Jaret Winokur and Diana DeGarmo in the Hollywood Bowl in August.
With Nick Jonas looking for a five-month toplining gig within the strong-selling Broadway revival of "How to achieve Business Without Really Trying," the development is constantly on the use creative casting to maintain the tuner drawing more youthful auds and also the family crowd to some 1961 satirical musical more frequently slanted toward a mature demo. Jonas will certainly be considered a lure for that Disney Funnel aud. He follows within the actions "How you can Succeed" star Daniel Radcliffe, already tugging in passionate youthful auds as well as their parents towards the tuner, and approaching alternative Darren Criss, the thesp with a hollywood among teens because of his current role in "Glee." Jonas will have protag J. Pierre-pont Finch within the Frank Loesser comedy in regards to a window-washer who makes his in place the organization ladder using a self-help book. Like Radcliffe and Criss, the 19-year-old Jonas is more youthful than other thesps who've performed the part: Both Robert Morse and Matthew Broderick were within their 30s once they described Finch in earlier Broadway incarnations. Producers from the current revival contend that Finch, a guy just beginning in his career, would most likely skew toward the more youthful finish from the spectrum anyway. Besides, such casting helps the development catch the attention of more youthful auds that may not otherwise show much curiosity about a satire about the corporate world. "It is a residual effect of casting by doing this," states producer Craig Zadan. "Everyone within the show is aged lower, and consequently, your audiences are larger." Zadan and Neil Meron, the "Footloose" producers who also provide Broadway-designed TV skein "Smash" within the works, produce "How you can Succeed" with Broadway Across America (John Gore, Thomas B. Low Existence
A L'ensemble des Films du Losange discharge of an Agora Films production, in colaboration with Maia Cinema. (Worldwide sales: L'ensemble des Films du Losange, Paris.) Created by Gilles Sandoz. Executive producers, Sandoz, Alain Guesnier. Directed, compiled by Nicolas Klotz, Elisabeth Perceval. With: Camille Rutherford, Arash Naimian, Luc Chessel, Michael Evans, Maud Wyler, Winson Calixte. (French, Farsi dialogue)"Low Existence" is not even close to a higher point for Gallic author-director Nicolas Klotz ("Heartbeat Detector"). Collectively helmed together with his regular co-scripter Elisabeth Perceval, pic initially shows a loose posse of studiedly forlorn Lyon youngsters who rally around some immigrants. Other half concentrates on the breakup of two Frenchies, both borderline obsessive, along with a foreigner who subsequently becomes the girl's new pet project. Equating some First World kids' amorous troubles with major sociopolitical issues affecting 1000's will strike most auds as pretentious, as the film's droning solemnity and drab HD lensing should give foreign distribs further pause. Meandering first hour provides a fly-on-the-wall take a look at a ragtag couple of students who've adopted several clandestine aliens, though their idealism is unfocused and poetic ("The worldwide horizon of democracy is war," it's helpfully described). Activities include smoking, consuming, worrying over love and fending from the police. When Carmen (Camille Rutherford) leaves clingy aspirant bard Charles (Luc Chessel, who appears like a "Twilight" Vulturi reject), happens is placed on her fresh fixation by having an Afghani poet (Arash Naimian).
